Plastic Pallet Load Capacity: Static, Dynamic, Racking
A loaded plastic pallet may stay flat on a warehouse floor but start to sag after it is placed on pallet racking. The cargo weight has not changed. The support condition has.
On the floor, most of the pallet base receives support. A forklift supports the pallet with its forks. On a rack, only a few parts of the pallet may rest on the beams.
This is why plastic pallet load capacity cannot be shown as one number. Buyers need to understand static load, dynamic load, and racking load before choosing a pallet.
What Do the Three Plastic Pallet Load Ratings Mean?
Each load rating describes a different support condition. The three figures cannot replace one another.
Static Load
Static load is the maximum weight a plastic pallet can support while it rests on a solid, level floor. The pallet stays still, and most of its base receives support.
This figure applies to floor storage. It does not show how much weight the pallet can carry during forklift handling or rack storage.
Dynamic Load
Dynamic load is the maximum weight a pallet can support while a forklift or pallet jack lifts and moves it.
The pallet faces extra force during lifting, travel, turns, and stops. For this reason, dynamic load is normally lower than static load.
Racking Load
Racking load is the maximum weight a pallet can support when it rests on rack beams.
The center of the pallet may have no direct support. The pallet must resist bending across the open space between the beams.
Only pallets with a stated racking load should be used on beam racking.

For example, one 1200 × 1000 × 150 mm heavy-duty plastic pallet has a static load of 6,000 kg, a dynamic load of 1,500 kg, and a racking load of 1,000 kg. This model also contains eight steel bars.
These figures apply only to that pallet model. Other pallets with the same dimensions may have different load ratings.
Why Does One Pallet Have Three Different Capacities?
A pallet receives strong support when it rests on the floor. The cargo weight passes through the deck and base into the ground.
The support area becomes smaller after a forklift lifts the pallet. Most of the pressure moves to the areas above the forks. Movement and sudden stops also add force.
Rack storage creates another support condition. The rack beams may support only the runners or outer parts of the pallet. The center must hold the cargo without support underneath.
A flat board gives a simple example. It is hard to bend when it lies on the floor. It bends more easily when it rests across two supports.
A pallet with a 6,000 kg static load cannot automatically hold 6,000 kg on a rack. If its racking load is 1,000 kg, buyers must follow the 1,000 kg rating for rack storage.
How Should Buyers Read Plastic Pallet Load Data?
Buyers should first confirm that the supplier lists all load types clearly. A specification that only states "load capacity" does not provide enough information.
Ask whether the figure means static, dynamic, or racking load. A large number may only apply when the pallet rests on a level floor.
Load data must also match the exact pallet model. Pallets with different base designs, deck structures, weights, or steel reinforcement can have different capacities.
A nine-leg pallet, three-runner pallet, full-perimeter pallet, and reversible pallet should not share the same load figures. Their support structures are different.
For rackable plastic pallets, buyers should also confirm whether the stated capacity includes steel bars. A pallet without steel reinforcement may look almost the same but have a lower racking load.
The supplier should state the test conditions for the racking load. Important details include beam spacing, pallet direction, test time, and load distribution.
Which Load Rating Applies to Your Application?
The correct figure depends on how the pallet moves through the warehouse.
Floor Storage Only
If the loaded pallet stays on a level floor, static load is the main rating.
The cargo must still stay stable and spread its weight across the pallet deck. A high static load does not make the pallet suitable for forklift handling or racking.
Forklift Handling
If a forklift or pallet jack moves the pallet, dynamic load becomes essential.
For example, a pallet may have a 4,000 kg static load but only a 1,000 kg dynamic load. It cannot safely carry a 1,200 kg cargo load during normal handling, even though the static figure is much higher.
Rack Storage
If the pallet will be stored on rack beams, buyers must check the racking load.
A pallet may support the cargo on the floor and during forklift movement but still have an insufficient racking load. Rack storage often becomes the limiting stage.
Forklift Handling Followed by Rack Storage
This process requires both dynamic and racking load ratings.
Consider a pallet with a static load of 6,000 kg, a dynamic load of 1,500 kg, and a racking load of 1,000 kg. A forklift may move a 1,200 kg load, but that load is too heavy for rack storage.
The correct pallet must meet the cargo weight at every stage. Buyers should not select a model based only on the highest figure in the specification.
What Conditions Affect the Racking Load?
Racking load requires more attention because the pallet has limited support underneath.
Rack Beam Spacing
A wider beam span creates a larger unsupported area. This can increase pallet deflection.
Buyers should provide the actual beam spacing before ordering. The supplier's test setup should be close to the warehouse rack design.
Pallet Orientation
Some pallets have ribs and steel bars in specific directions. Rotating the pallet may change which areas rest on the beams.
The supplier should confirm the correct rack direction. Warehouse staff should follow the same placement method.
Cargo Distribution
Published load ratings normally assume that the cargo weight is spread across the pallet deck.
Cartons often provide a wide contact area. Drums, machine feet, pallet boxes, and other products may place pressure on only a few points.
Two loads can have the same total weight but create very different pressure on the pallet. Buyers should provide the cargo base shape and contact area.
Storage Time
A plastic pallet may slowly bend under a constant load. It may look flat when first placed on the rack, but its deflection can increase over time.
Long-term rack storage needs more care than short warehouse turnover. Buyers should tell the supplier how long each loaded pallet will remain on the rack.
Warehouse Temperature
Temperature can affect the stiffness and impact strength of plastic.
High temperatures may increase long-term deflection. Cold storage requires a material that keeps enough impact strength at the actual operating temperature.
Steel Reinforcement
Steel bars can improve pallet stiffness and reduce deflection between rack beams.
However, steel quantity alone does not decide the racking load. Bar length, direction, position, and the pallet's rib structure all affect the result.
Materials, pallet structure, cargo contact area, and working conditions also affect how much weight a plastic pallet can hold.
Why Can a Pallet Fail Below Its Rated Load?
A pallet can fail even when the cargo weight appears to be below the published rating.
One common reason is the use of the wrong figure. A buyer may use static load to judge a rack application.
Uneven cargo is another cause. A machine with four small feet may place strong pressure on only four parts of the deck.
Incorrect forklift use can also damage the pallet. Short forks, partial fork entry, sudden turns, and impact can place too much force on a small area.
Rack conditions may differ from the supplier's test conditions. A wider beam span or incorrect pallet direction may increase deflection.
Old or damaged pallets also have less reliable capacity. Cracks, broken runners, loose steel bars, and permanent bending are clear reasons to remove a pallet from rack use.
How Is Plastic Pallet Load Capacity Verified?
Load figures should come from tests under defined support conditions.
Static testing places the pallet on a level surface. Dynamic testing supports it with forks or simulated forks. Racking testing places it across supports that represent rack beams.
For racking tests, the supplier should record:
- Exact pallet model
- Pallet material
- Steel bar configuration
- Applied load
- Beam spacing
- Pallet orientation
- Test duration
- Maximum deflection
- Permanent deformation after unloading
A test result has little value when these conditions are missing. Buyers should not rely on statements such as "very strong" or "heavy load" without specific data.
For large orders, a sample test under actual warehouse conditions provides stronger confirmation. The sample should use the real cargo, rack spacing, and handling equipment.
How to Choose the Correct Plastic Pallet Load Rating
Start with the maximum cargo weight per pallet. Include the product, packaging, and containers.
Next, list every stage in the process:
- Floor storage
- Forklift handling
- Loaded stacking
- Rack storage
Then match each stage with the correct load rating. If the pallet moves through several stages, every relevant rating must meet the cargo weight.
For rack use, also provide:
- Rack beam spacing
- Pallet direction
- Cargo contact area
- Storage time
- Warehouse temperature
Do not copy load figures from another product with the same dimensions. The internal structure and reinforcement may be different.
Enlightening Pallet offers plastic pallet models for racking, stacking, export handling, floor storage, and hygienic applications. Each model has load data for its intended use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pallet with a 6,000 kg static load hold 6,000 kg on racks?
No. Rack storage must follow the stated racking load and its test conditions.
Does a 1,500 kg dynamic load mean any forklift can move 1,500 kg?
No. The rating assumes correct fork support and suitable cargo distribution. Short forks and uneven loads can increase the risk of damage.
Can every three-runner plastic pallet be used on racks?
No. Only models with a stated racking load and suitable test data should be placed on rack beams.
Does adding more steel bars always increase racking load?
No. The position, direction, and size of the bars also matter.
Why does a plastic pallet bend on racking?
Common causes include a wide beam span, uneven cargo, long storage time, high temperature, or an insufficient racking load.
Static, dynamic, and racking load ratings describe three different support conditions. Static load applies to floor storage, dynamic load applies to handling, and racking load applies to beam storage.
The correct plastic pallet must meet the cargo weight at every stage of use. Buyers should check the relevant rating, support conditions, and exact pallet model before placing an order.
